Microdermabrasion
To some, the interworking of spas and salons are unknown territory. There are terms and service titles that few understand. Microdermabrasion happens to be one of them. It is a spa treatment that many spa-goers have heard of, but few are well informed about. Read below to find out what microdermabrasion is, the benefits of microdermabrasion, who needs it, why it works – and even learn about an effective alternative.

How does it work?
Microdermabrasion treatments use a minimally abrasive instrument that uses tiny crystals to gently remove the uneven outer layer of your skin. Microdermabrasion helps to thicken your collagen, which results in a younger looking complexion. Collagen is a protein in your skin that’s abundant when you’re a child and makes skin appear taut and smooth. Collagen production declines as we age, resulting in looser, uneven skin.
Benefits from microdermabrasion
- Improve age spots and black heads
- Improve hyperpigmentation (patches of darkened skin)
- Exfoliate your skin, resulting in a refreshed appearance
- Lessen the appearance of stretch marks.
- Reduce fine lines and wrinkles
- Reduce or eliminate enlarged pores
- Treat acne and the scars left by acne
Best candidates for microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion is somewhat useful for people with dull or sallow skin, mild acne, acne discoloration, pick marks, and very superficial acne scars. Microdermabrasion may be a good treatment option for patients with superficial skin problems and busy lifestyles who are looking for minimal benefits with virtually no side effects or downtime. While there are no specific age or sex restrictions, typically children over age 12 up to adults age 65 can get microdermabrasion. While there is no age maximum, mature skin over age 70 may have slightly higher risks of bruising and skin abrasions.
Preparing for Microdermabrasion:
- We recommend to arrive at your appointment with no makeup on
- Avoid direct sunlight ( sun bathing, tanning etc.)
- No pre-medication is required but your technician may ask you to stop taking aspirin-based medicines, Retin-A, Renova, Differin or glycolic acid products
- Stopping smoking a week before microdermabrasion is also recommended to improve blood flow and so is avoiding sunbathing and waxing.
Are there any risks or down time that comes with Microdermabrasion?
There are minimal risks and little to no down time with microdermabrasion.
After Microdermabrasion Treatment
You will receive a sunscreen hydrating moisturizer after microdermabrasion, to avoid sun damage after leaving the doctor’s office. Some redness might occur on treated areas, but they generally disappear after a few hours. During the first 24 hours, your skin may feel dry, similarly to effects of a mild wind or sunburn. Use lots of moisturizer during the first few days. Avoid sun exposure for at least a week after the treatment, don’t use any peeling products for the next 3-4 days and avoid full-face make up (liquid foundation or pressed powder).
How often do treatments need to be done?
Your technician can give you a rough idea of the number of microdermabrasion required for best results. Major changes are obvious after the fifth session, even though most patients say they observed improvements after the first two. Most doctors suggest 6 to 10 microdermabrasion treatments, scheduled around two weeks apart, so the skin has time to recover between microdermabrasion sessions. After the recommended number of sessions, you may have to schedule another microdermabrasion once every two or three months, to maintain the effects. Although, in certain situations our technicians recommend to have a treatment at least once a month for maintenance.
How soon can I return to work?
You can return to work the minute you leave your doctor’s office. If your skin looks reddish, like after mild sunburn, you can cover it up with some light make-up
We also offer an all natural, alternative treatment for fine lines and Acne Scar Removal, called Beyond Botox. We recommend a consultation for more information on that particular procedure.
